Consider the Golden Horn glistening in the distance. We stand before the Yeni Cami. It is also known as the New Mosque. This Ottoman imperial mosque dominates Istanbul’s Eminönü quarter. Its story is interwoven with powerful women and political intrigue.

The story of Yeni Cami begins in 1597. Safiye Sultan ordered its construction. She was the wife of Sultan Murad III. As Valide Sultan or Queen Mother of Sultan Mehmed III, she held immense power. Safiye aimed to extend Islamic influence. She chose the bustling commercial center of Eminönü. This area had a large Jewish population.

Davut Ağa was the original architect. He was a student of the renowned Mimar Sinan. He died in 1599 and Dalgıç Ahmed Çavuş replaced him. But the project faced hurdles. Political tensions and financial concerns caused dissent. The Janissaries saw the mosque as an unnecessary expense.

Safiye Sultan lost favor after Mehmed III’s death in 1603. Ahmed I, the new Sultan, abandoned the project. The incomplete structure fell into disrepair. The Great Fire of 1660 damaged it further. It ravaged many Istanbul neighborhoods.

Then, Turhan Sultan stepped in. She was the mother of Sultan Mehmed IV. The imperial architect Mustafa Ağa suggested she complete the mosque as a pious act. Turhan also commissioned the Spice Bazaar nearby. The bazaar became part of the Yeni Cami complex. Construction resumed in 1660.

Finally, in 1663, the mosque was completed. It was inaugurated in 1665. It was renamed the New Valide Sultan Mosque. Over time, it became simply the New Mosque or Yeni Cami.

The Yeni Cami’s exterior is striking. It features 66 domes and semi-domes arranged in a pyramid shape. Two minarets rise gracefully. The main dome reaches 36 meters. It rests on four semi-domes. The design echoes Mimar Sinan’s Şehzade Mosque.

A monumental courtyard precedes the mosque. It is 39 meters square. A colonnaded peristyle surrounds it. Twenty-four small domes top the peristyle. An ornamental şadırvan or ablution fountain stands in the center.

Inside, the Yeni Cami is square. It measures 41 meters on each side. Four large piers support the central dome. Marble columns and arches define the space. Calligraphic plates display the names of the first four caliphs. These plates adorn the corners where the dome meets the pillars.

The interior features blue, green, and white İznik tiles. A gilded screen marks the Royal Loge. The imperial court used this space. A long passageway connects it to a Royal Pavilion.

Ahmed III added a library in 1724-25. It stands near the tomb. Seventeen tombs reside here. These include Hasan Bedreddin Bey and Murad V.

Like other imperial mosques, Yeni Cami was designed as a külliye. This complex included a hospital, primary school, and the Spice Bazaar. The Turkish General Directorate of Foundations oversees ongoing restoration.

Yeni Cami stands as a testament to Ottoman artistry. Its history reflects the power and piety of the women who shaped it. Take a moment to appreciate its grandeur. Think of the stories whispered within these walls.
