Originally a tram depot, Fulwell Bus Garage boasts a rich history. It stands as a testament to London’s evolving transport system. This garage has been serving the community since 1902.
Fulwell Bus Garage started as a tram depot for London United Tramways. The depot opened its doors on April 2nd 1903. The site was part of the Freake Fulwell Park Estate. London United Tramways secured a 99-year lease in April 1902. This was for a new tram depot. New tram routes to Hampton Court Palace began operating just as the depot was completed.
Fulwell Bus Garage had entrances on Stanley Road and Wellington Road. The shed featured 20 tracks. However it was never fully used. Trolleybuses joined the trams in 1931. The last trams departed in 1935. The London Passenger Transport Board took over London United Tramways in 1933. Fulwell became London Transport’s primary trolleybus workshop. It was among the last depots to switch to motor buses on May 9th 1962.
After the closure of the Twickenham garage in 1970, work increased at Fulwell. The garage was rebuilt in 1986/87. It remained open during reconstruction. The rebuilt garage was split across its width instead of its length.
Fulwell was given to the London United subsidiary during the privatization of London Buses. Initially ninety vehicles were assigned here. It later became the company’s head office.
Tellings-Golden Miller relocated to Fulwell Bus Garage in 1999. This followed their success in winning Transport for London routes. Travel London purchased the business in June 2005. Abellio London acquired Travel London in May 2009.
Fulwell was divided along its length. The sports ground was located between the garage and South Road. The northern half and the front yard were used for bus operations. The southern half and the Stanley Road entrance were leased out.
London Buses initially used the rear part of the garage to sell withdrawn buses. The sales department closed with the privatization of London Buses. Kelly Construction briefly used the site. They were laying cable television in the area. The sports ground was redeveloped commercially.
Today both halves of Fulwell Bus Garage are operational. Transport UK London Bus occupies the Stanley Road end. London United operates from the Wellington Road end. This also houses its head office.
Fulwell Bus Garage was recognized for customer service in 2004. It was named one of the best in London.
In 2021 emission-free buses were introduced at Fulwell. The Fulwell team focuses on customers. They provide a quality network. Annually the garage operates 5440080 miles. Eleven bus routes operate from here. Fulwell Bus Garage is 14 miles from Central London. Fulwell stands as a landmark. It mirrors London’s transport evolution.
