Imagine stepping back in time over 1,300 years. That’s when the story of Fulham Palace truly begins. This site’s history stretches back even further. Archaeological studies reveal evidence of human activity here as far back as 6,000 years.

Fulham has always been an important place. Its location near a natural crossing point on the River Thames attracted ancient travelers. The earliest archaeological finds date back to the Late Mesolithic to Early Neolithic periods, around 4,000 BC.

During the Bronze Age, starting around 2,500 BC, Fulham was farmland. Excavations at Fulham Palace have uncovered evidence of this peaceful life continuing until the Early Iron Age. Then around 300 BC, things changed.

The Roman occupation of Britain, from AD 43 to 410, brought significant activity to the site. Excavations have unearthed Roman coins, pottery and building materials. Paths and roadways indicate the presence of a Roman settlement. It’s possible that a Roman villa once stood near the walled garden.

When the Romans left, the Saxons took over many of their buildings. Early Saxon finds around London are rare. Fulham Palace has yielded two pieces of pottery dating from between AD 400 and 600.

In AD 704, Fulham’s connection with the Bishops of London began. Bishop Waldhere acquired the site as part of a large estate. This estate covered most of Hammersmith, Fulham, Acton, Ealing and Finchley. The Anglo Saxon Chronicle mentions that a Viking encampment occupied the site for a year or two.

Between 1066 and the late 14th century, Fulham Palace became the largest moated domestic site in England. It enclosed 36 acres of land. The first manor house may have stood near a corner of the moat close to the River Thames.

During the mid-13th century, a decision was made to move the manor house. The old site was abandoned. New buildings sprang up around what is now the east courtyard. The Fulham Palace you see today began to take shape here.

Queen Elizabeth I visited Fulham Palace in 1600. A grand dinner was held in her honor. Over the centuries, an estimated 120 London bishops have resided here. Fulham Palace has been an important residence for a long time.
