Have you ever felt the weight of centuries pressing down on you? Stand here, in front of the Fulham Palace Chapel, and you can almost hear the whispers of history. This beautiful building, dating back to the 18th century, has witnessed the lives of many bishops of London, each leaving their own mark on the palace and the chapel. Bishop Tait, for example, was so moved by the beauty of the surrounding palace grounds that he built this chapel. He desired a more suitable space for worship than the palace’s Great Hall. The original chapel had to be demolished to make way for this beautiful structure in 1866. What a testament to the importance of faith and ceremony that it was rebuilt in such a prominent location. The chapel boasts captivating stained glass windows, crafted by Clayton and Bell. One of the most impressive features is the east window, designed by Sir Ninian Comper. It depicts the Risen Saviour giving St Peter the command to “Feed my sheep”. The surrounding windows are stunning, featuring portraits of two bishops, Mandell Creighton and William Wand, and a poignant depiction of Bishop Wand’s son, who tragically passed away while mountaineering.

This chapel is more than just a beautiful building. It’s a place of worship that has stood for centuries, a silent witness to the ebb and flow of life in London. You might think this is just a small chapel, but its history is as large as the palace itself, and its presence is just as powerful. It’s a reminder that even in the bustle of modern London, the echoes of the past still resonate, inviting us to reflect and connect with the deeper meaning of our lives.
