Lost in the heart of Fukuoka, amid a vibrant tapestry of green, lies a treasure waiting to be discovered: the Fukuoka Municipal Zoo and Botanical Garden. This isn’t just any garden, it’s an experience steeped in history and bursting with life. Established in 1953 at its current location, the Fukuoka Municipal Zoo and Botanical Garden has blossomed into a beloved landmark.

Originally, the gardens found their humble beginnings near the city’s East park in 1933. They were founded to celebrate Emperor Hirohito’s coronation. This original space held around 500 animals and 100 plant species. The ravages of World War II forced its closure in 1944. Large animals were euthanized during that time. But the spirit of the garden lived on.

After the war, the city decided to establish a new zoo in South park. In 1952, the Fukuoka City Zoological Society gathered funds for the project. On August 22, 1953, the Fukuoka Municipal Zoo and Botanical Garden reopened in its present location. It began with 143 animals representing 69 species.

The Fukuoka Municipal Zoo and Botanical Garden grew quickly. By 1954, it expanded northward. The animal collection grew to 353 individuals from 110 species. More land was added, and the Fukuoka Municipal Zoo and Botanical Garden housed 400 animals of 120 species in 1956.

Today, the Fukuoka Municipal Zoo and Botanical Garden is home to about 700 animals of 160 species. It also has about 1,300 types of outdoor plants. The greenhouse shelters over 1,200 plant species. You’ll find orchids, ferns, and cacti there.

The rose garden is very popular. It features 1,300 roses of about 280 varieties. Spring and autumn offer the best views. Spring brings many large flowers. Autumn offers rich, vibrant colors.

Don’t miss the spacious greenhouse. It showcases rare tropical plants. Follow the recommended route to see plants from above. An herb garden and water garden also await. The citizens’ flower garden might inspire your own gardening.

A square flower bed at the botanical garden’s entrance is a photo spot. Head to the observation deck for city views. You can see Tenjin and Hakata Station. There’s also a cafe with a playground called the Observatory Kids Terrace.

The central lawn is perfect for relaxation. This spacious lawn surrounds a pond. It’s ideal for picnics. Enjoy seasonal plants like cherry blossoms in spring. Lily-of-the-valley flowers appear in early summer. Acorn-bearing oak trees arrive in autumn.

Children adore the miniature rides. A Ferris wheel and merry-go-round offer panoramic city views. The Fukuoka Municipal Zoo and Botanical Garden is a place where nature and joy intertwine.

From humble beginnings to a vibrant urban oasis, the Fukuoka Municipal Zoo and Botanical Garden offers a unique blend of flora and fauna. It is a place where memories are made and the wonders of nature are always in full bloom. The Fukuoka Municipal Zoo and Botanical Garden is open from 9 am to 5 pm. It’s closed on Mondays and during the New Year’s period. Come and experience the magic.
