Deep within the heart of Fukuoka, a silent giant slumbers. Fukuoka Castle, also known as Maizuru Castle, stands as a testament to a bygone era of samurai and shoguns. Fukuoka Castle, completed in 1607, was a masterpiece of military engineering. It was designed by Kuroda Nagamasa, a powerful daimyo rewarded for his loyalty during the Battle of Sekigahara. He didn’t just want a castle, he envisioned a fortress. The renowned stonemason Noguchi Kazunari, who later worked on Edo Castle, brought this vision to life. He used stones from the dismantled Najima Castle and even remnants of fortifications built against the Mongol invasions. Katō Kiyomasa, a respected warlord, praised Fukuoka Castle’s grandeur, particularly admiring its dry-stone fortifications, earning it the nickname “Seki-jō,” meaning “Stone Castle.” Imagine 47 yaguras, traditional Japanese turrets, rising against the sky. Picture massive stone walls, intricately designed by Noguchi, stretching for over 47,000 square meters. This made Fukuoka Castle the largest in the Kyushu region, a symbol of Kuroda’s power and influence. The castle town flourished under Kuroda’s rule. It was renamed Fukuoka, after his ancestral home in Bizen Province. The strategic location, near the bustling port of Hakata, facilitated trade and prosperity. But Fukuoka Castle’s story is not just one of military might. In 1987, during renovations to the former Heiwadai Baseball Stadium, a remarkable discovery was made. The remnants of a korokan, an ancient guesthouse for foreign diplomats, were unearthed beneath the castle grounds. This was the only korokan remnant found in all of Japan. It revealed that the area was a vital geographical checkpoint, even during the Heian period, centuries before the castle’s construction. Today, much of Fukuoka Castle’s former grounds is now Maizuru Park. Yet, remnants of its impressive past survive. Some of the castle gates, towers, and yaguras still stand within the park, preserved as historical artifacts. They whisper stories of samurai, shoguns, and a time when Fukuoka Castle dominated the landscape. As you stroll through the park, imagine the grandeur of this once-mighty fortress, and remember the echoes of history that resonate within these ancient stones.
