Gaze upon this imposing figure. This is the statue of Prince-Bishop Franz Ludwig von Erthal. He ruled Bamberg and Würzburg from 1779 until his death in 1795. More than just a ruler he was a reformer. A man ahead of his time.

Franz Ludwig von Erthal wasn’t your typical Prince-Bishop. While his predecessors reveled in lavish court life he favored a simpler existence. He shunned the opulent lifestyle associated with the Baroque era. He famously closed the court theater selling the props to benefit an orphanage. He even abolished the court lottery viewing it as morally corrupting.

Instead of lavish displays von Erthal focused on improving the lives of his subjects. He championed education for the clergy and implemented significant healthcare reforms. He’s often called Germany’s first social bishop. In Bamberg he established the city’s first modern hospital a remarkable feat for its time. He also introduced a pioneering social insurance program for craftsmen essentially an early form of health insurance. Think of him as the original social security administrator.

But his reforms weren’t limited to Bamberg. In Würzburg he modernized the Juliusspital a hospital associated with the University of Würzburg. He oversaw significant improvements to the building creating a more humane environment for the patients. This included issuing “Instructions for the Supervisors of the Insane” aiming for more compassionate treatment. He also established a veterinary medicine department at the University of Bamberg.

Von Erthal was a man of his word. His motto was “The prince is for the people not the people for the prince”. This philosophy guided his entire reign. He prioritized the needs of his subjects above personal gain or pleasure.

This statue stands as a testament to his legacy. It commemorates a man who chose service over self-indulgence a reformer who modernized his principalities and placed the well-being of his people above all else. He left a lasting mark not just on Bamberg but on the entire region. He stands here as a symbol of progressive leadership and social responsibility. A truly unique Prince-Bishop indeed.
