Feel the cool spray of the Fuente de los Atletas. Its bronze athletes stand eternally poised. This magnificent fountain in Montevideo’s Parque Rodo is more than just a pretty sight. It’s a testament to Uruguayan artistry and international acclaim.

The Fuente de los Atletas is a creation of the renowned sculptor Jose Luis Zorrilla de San Martin. He sculpted the original in plaster in 1923. It wasn’t just a local success. In 1925 his smaller-scale version won a Silver Medal at the prestigious Salon d’Automne in Paris. Imagine the thrill of this Uruguayan artist’s work being showcased alongside the best of Europe. Some speculate that the lack of a gold medal may have stemmed from showcasing his work in Antoine Bourdelle’s atelier before the Salon. The judges may have found it less impressive having seen it already.

The sculpture’s beauty lies in its detail. Notice the three young athletes. They are perfectly balanced interlocked supporting a cup from which water flows. Their forms are classically inspired. They exude strength and grace capturing the spirit of athleticism. Zorrilla’s style deliberately avoided the avant-garde trends of the early 20th century. Instead he chose the classical models of the Renaissance. This choice reflects a deep appreciation for the human form and its capabilities.

The Montevideo Municipal Government acquired the Fuente de los Atletas in 1930. The bronze casting was done in Paris. It was then installed in its current location. The twelve-sided polygonal pool and the pink granite pedestal were made in the Art Deco style. This striking combination of sculpture and architecture makes it a true gem.

This fountain is more than just a work of art. It’s a symbol of Montevideo’s commitment to beauty and its rich cultural heritage. It’s a living piece of history you can touch see and feel. It’s a story in bronze and water. So take a moment to appreciate its artistry and its story. Reflect on the talent of Jose Luis Zorrilla de San Martin. Let the Fuente de los Atletas leave a lasting impression on you.
