Frye Art Museum

Seattle’s Frye Art Museum whispers tales of a bygone era. It all began with Charles and Emma Frye, German immigrants who amassed a remarkable collection of 19th-century German and Austrian art. Charles, a meatpacking magnate, dreamt of sharing their treasures with the world. He envisioned a sanctuary of art, bathed in natural light, where their collection would remain on permanent display, free of charge. Upon their passing, the Frye’s collection was initially offered to the Seattle Art Museum. However, the museum declined due to Charles Frye’s specific stipulations in his will, particularly the requirement for permanent display. Following a fire at Charles Frye’s meatpacking plant in 1943, where the art was temporarily stored, the Frye Art Museum finally opened its doors in 1952 in Seattle’s First Hill neighborhood. The museum became a haven for representational art, reflecting Charles’s traditional taste. The original building, designed by Paul Thiry, was later expanded and renovated by Rick Sundberg in the mid-1990s, adding an auditorium and an education studio. Today, the Frye Art Museum continues to honor the Fryes’ legacy, offering free admission and engaging exhibitions that span from historical masterpieces to contemporary works. The permanent collection, displayed salon-style, evokes the atmosphere of the Fryes’ original gallery.
