Isn’t it remarkable how a single street can hold so much history? We are standing on Friesdorfer Straße in Bonn. This street, like many others in Germany, carries echoes of a dark past.

Friesdorf itself is a quarter of the city district Bad Godesberg. It is located in Bonn. As of 2020, around 8,373 people called Friesdorf home. But the stones beneath our feet tell a more specific story.

Look closely at the pavement. You will see small brass plaques. These are Stolpersteine, or stumbling stones. They commemorate individuals who were murdered by the Nazis. These stones serve as poignant reminders of the Holocaust. They are placed in front of the homes of the victims.

Here on Friesdorfer Straße, several Stolpersteine mark the residences of those who perished. Frieda Daniel, born in 1887, was murdered in Auschwitz in 1943. Jeanette Daniel, born in 1860, met the same fate on the same day. Josef Daniel, born in 1894, was murdered in Auschwitz a few months prior. Max Isaak, born in 1876, was murdered in Treblinka. Sara Isaak, born in 1874, also died in Treblinka. Paula Nachmann, born in 1906, was murdered in Maly Trostencz in 1942. Lina Israel, born in 1878, was also murdered.

These stones bear the names, birth dates, and death dates of the victims. They also mention the location where they were murdered. Each stone is a stark reminder of the individual lives that were brutally cut short. The Stolpersteine project was initiated by the German artist Gunter Demnig. He personally lays many of these memorials. You can find these memorials in many cities across Germany and Europe. Their number continues to grow as more victims are remembered.

As you walk along Friesdorfer Straße, take a moment to reflect on these lives. Remember the families who once lived here. Consider the impact of the Holocaust on this community. These stumbling stones are not just memorials. They are a call to remember. They are a call to prevent such atrocities from ever happening again. They urge us to stand up against hatred and intolerance. Friesdorfer Straße is more than just a street. It is a living memorial. It keeps alive the stories of those who were lost.
