In 1894 Reverend General S Coleman arrived in Chicago from West Virginia. He brought his wife three daughters and his mother. He met Reverend Harry W Knight. A strong Christian bond formed between them. This friendship led to the founding of Friendship Baptist Church.
In March 1897 Reverends Knight and Coleman organized Friendship Baptist Church. Families and other individuals helped them. John Rodgers Margaret Russell Josie Arnell and George Bently were among those who assisted. Their first location was at Lake and Sangamon Streets. Reverend Knight became the first pastor.
Friendship Baptist Church grew rapidly. By 1911 it had 300 members. The church relocated to 218 North Ada Street. They bought the property for $15000. Bessie Harding was their first organist. Reverend Matthews succeeded Reverend Knight. He served until his death in 1914.
Over the years Friendship Baptist Church had many pastors. Each one left their mark. Reverend Lucillious L Drane led the church from 1915 to 1929. Membership soared to 900 under his leadership. The church even had a baseball team. Reverend S S Jones pastored the church during the Great Depression. Times were hard. Membership declined. He resigned in 1935.
Reverend E L Twine became pastor in 1935. He helped the church regain its strength. Reverend Joseph Rufus Davis followed him in 1946. He oversaw a period of significant growth adding approximately 1000 members.
In 1955 Reverend Shelvin Jerome Hall became pastor. His tenure lasted 51 years. He was a visionary leader. He initiated Sunday and Wednesday night services. He established many programs including a Release Time School and various youth groups. He opened the church doors to civic and religious organizations including the NAACP and the Civil Rights Movement. Reverend Martin Luther King Jr preached at Friendship Baptist Church.
In 1962 the church purchased new property at 3411 West Douglas Boulevard. They moved into their new home in 1962. They held a motorcade with over 100 cars. This marked a significant milestone.
In 1983 Friendship Baptist Church moved again. This time to 5200 West Jackson Boulevard. They held a dedication ceremony with Reverend Dr Mack McCollum delivering the first sermon. In 1987 they burned their mortgage. They also unveiled a Dr Martin Luther King Jr Bell Tower.
In 2006 Reverend Reginald E Bachus became the eighth pastor of Friendship Baptist Church. He continued the legacy of service and growth. He oversaw significant renovations to the church building. He implemented new programs and ministries. He also expanded the church’s social media presence.
Today Friendship Baptist Church continues its mission. It strives to meet the Great Commission. It serves its congregation and the wider community. It is a testament to enduring faith and friendship. It stands as a beacon of hope and inspiration. It has a rich history. It continues to evolve. It remains a vital part of Chicago’s vibrant tapestry.
