Friedrich Engels Statue

Sculpted in bronze, Friedrich Engels stands tall before you. He’s a commanding presence, isn’t he? This imposing statue of Friedrich Engels, a key figure in the development of Marxist theory, has stood here in Moscow since 1976. It’s a significant landmark, marking not only Engels’s contributions to political thought but also a specific period in Moscow’s history. The Friedrich Engels Statue is more than just a monument; it’s a time capsule, capturing the ideological currents of the Soviet era. The statue, a full 6 meters high, was designed by sculptor I. I. Kozlovsky and architects A. A. Zavarzin and A. A. Usachev. Engels is portrayed in his prime, reflecting his image during the 1870s. This was the time he, along with Karl Marx, spearheaded the international working-class movement. His arms are crossed thoughtfully across his chest. The red granite pedestal on which he stands provides a sturdy base, a symbolic representation perhaps of the foundations of Marxist ideology. The Friedrich Engels Statue was unveiled on November 2, 1976. The timing was deliberate, just before the 59th anniversary of the October Revolution. A grand ceremony, attended by prominent figures like V. V. Grishin, the First Secretary of the CPSU MGK, marked the occasion. Interestingly, the location of the Friedrich Engels Statue often leads to a bit of confusion. Its proximity to the Kropotkinskaya metro station, on the former Kropotkinskaya Square (now the area of Prechistenskie Vorota), causes many to mistake it for a monument to Kropotkin. The Friedrich Engels Statue is situated in what was once a small park. The statue and the surrounding area, with its paved platform, granite fence, and semicircular benches, now almost entirely occupy the park space.  The Friedrich Engels Statue has weathered its own share of historical storms. While many monuments to communist figures were removed after the fall of the Soviet Union, this one remained. It stands as a reminder of the complex and multifaceted history of Moscow, a city that has seen empires rise and fall. The statue, overlooking the bustling city, invites contemplation. It prompts us to reflect on the evolution of political ideas, the enduring power of symbols, and the stories that monuments tell.
