Why did the Friedhofskapelle in Kassel become a sanctuary for both the living and the departed? The Friedhofskapelle in Wehlheiden stands as a quiet sentinel. It overlooks the oldest part of Wehlheiden Cemetery, a place of rest since 1833. The cemetery itself is divided by Sternbergstrasse. The older section, north of the street cradles the Friedhofskapelle. The newer section lies to the south. This division reflects the growth of the community over time. The Friedhofskapelle, built in the charming half-timbered style of the region, offers a peaceful space for reflection. Its opening date remains shrouded in mystery. Sadly, no records survive to tell us when its doors first opened to mourners. We do know, however, that the chapel can hold 60 people within its walls. At the Friedenstrasse entrance to the cemetery, a sandstone monument tells a story. The inscription recounts the cemetery’s dedication on April 3, 1833. It names Grebe Nicolaus Kersten, who oversaw the creation of this final resting place. It also names Pastor Gottfried Fenner, who consecrated the hallowed ground. The Friedhofskapelle in Wehlheiden offers solace to those grieving. It also provides a space for quiet contemplation. It reminds us of the continuous cycle of life and death, within the comforting embrace of history and community.
