Beneath the rustling leaves of the Lutherlinde at Friedhof Striesen, a story unfolds. Friedhof Striesen isn’t just a cemetery. It’s a living tapestry woven with the threads of Dresden’s past. Originally a peaceful resting place outside Striesen’s bustling center, Friedhof Striesen now finds itself embraced by the city’s growth. Consecrated in 1883, the cemetery’s first burial occurred a few months later. That same year, a young sapling was planted to commemorate Martin Luther’s 400th birthday. This sapling grew into the magnificent Lutherlinde that graces the grounds today. Designed by architect Gotthilf Ludwig Möckel, Friedhof Striesen boasts a captivating chapel built in the Neo-Romanesque style. A poignant relief above the portal depicts the Lamentation of Christ, flanked by Adam and Eve, with Gabriel and Michael standing guard at the arch. The chapel originally had a tall tower with a bell, consecrated in 1892. Sadly, the bombing of Dresden in 1945 inflicted damage upon the Friedhof Striesen, including its chapel. The tower was not restored during the reconstruction efforts. Instead, a more modest bell tower was added. The restored chapel was rededicated in 1956. Today, the chapel entrance is adorned by statues of the four Evangelists. These statues were salvaged from the ruins of the Dresden Erlöserkirche. Friedhof Striesen has expanded over the years to accommodate the growing city. It now encompasses nearly six hectares. The cemetery provides various burial options, including traditional burials and cremation. Friedhof Striesen stands as a testament to Dresden’s resilience and a tranquil sanctuary where stories continue to be written. It invites you to stroll among its paths and discover the legacies of those who rest here.
