Fifty thousand cubic meters of sand. That’s how much earth was moved to create Friedhof Moordeich. This isn’t just any cemetery. It’s a park-like landscape a testament to careful planning and a unique vision. Located in Stuhr near Bremen Friedhof Moordeich opened between 1985 and 1990. Its creation was driven by a need for more burial space. The existing cemeteries in Brinkum Heiligenrode and Alt-Stuhr were nearing capacity.

Friedhof Moordeich is more than just graves. It’s a beautiful place. Think gently rolling hills a serene lake reflecting the sky. Birches stand tall adding to the peaceful atmosphere. This intentional design mirrors the charm of the surrounding North German countryside. The architect Harm Haslob envisioned a harmonious blend of nature and architecture. The chapel ‘Huus achtern Diek’ (House behind the dike) is a prime example. Its low-slung red-brick structure resembles traditional farmhouses. Heavy iron chains seem to anchor the roof to the ground. This reinforces the image of resilience against the elements.

The inside of the chapel is a delightful contrast. White walls and an open roof create a bright airy space. A relief by Max Herrmann adorns the walls. It depicts a journey from earth to the afterlife. Even the floor is unique made of peat-fired bricks in a checkerboard pattern. The chapel which can hold 180 guests is heated by geothermal energy. A 120-kilogram bell first rang during its inauguration on May 4 1990.

Friedhof Moordeich holds a poignant distinction. A significant number of burials here are anonymous. This caters to the growing number of individuals lacking the funds for a traditional plot or family to care for it. These are not entirely nameless however. For a fee the name of the deceased can be engraved on a bronze plaque. In 2013 90% of the 245 burials were anonymous. Many came from the Bremen district of Huchting which is right next to Friedhof Moordeich. The cemetery’s location its thoughtful design and its compassionate approach to burial make Friedhof Moordeich a truly special place. It’s a place of quiet beauty and reflection a testament to life’s journey and the passage to the beyond.
