Friedhof Gröpelingen began in 1902. It started as a churchyard. You can see this in the entrance with its cross. The cemetery is a manageable green area. Graves are set respectfully in a meadow landscape. Old trees and hedges create a peaceful atmosphere.
Listen closely and you might hear birds singing. Their songs briefly mask the tram’s sounds. The cemetery spans one hectare. It offers a green oasis amidst city life.

The cemetery’s origins go back to the 1880s. The old St. Nikolaus churchyard was too small. A group of farmers offered land for a new cemetery. This land was at the edge of the village. Later it became near the tram depot built in 1926.
After Gröpelingen joined Bremen in 1902 the cemetery became city property. Families like Bosse Mattfeldt and Gäbel found their final resting place here.
In 1998 there were plans to close Friedhof Gröpelingen. The chapel was torn down. The Gröpelingen history workshop saved gravestones. They moved the Juchter and Timmermann stones. Now they stand by the Andreas Church wall. This prevents them from being ground into gravel.
Today the Waller Friedhof serves as the main cemetery for Gröpelingen and Walle. The district advisory councils decided to preserve Friedhof Gröpelingen in 2013. They wanted to create a space for valuable gravestones.
The entrance portal has a cross. This reminds us of its start as a church cemetery. The old trees provide shade. Hedges and shrubs add to the peaceful park-like setting.
Elard Ordemann a pastor and local historian is buried here. He died in 1945. His grave no longer exists.
