The scent of freshly cut grass hangs heavy in the air. A gentle breeze rustles the leaves of the ancient trees lining the paths of Friedhof Feldmoching. Founded in 1929, Friedhof Feldmoching served as the local graveyard for the then-independent town of Feldmoching. When it became a part of Munich in 1938, it retained its role as a vital resting place for those who called this district home. The cemetery holds about 2700 grave spaces in total.
Amongst its sprawling grounds, you’ll find a small ceremonial hall that served as a place of mourning and remembrance for decades. This very building held numerous funeral services, some of which were even conducted right inside the hall. It has been an important gathering space for families and friends wishing to pay their last respects.
There are two types of graves: Erdgräber and Urnengräber. Erdgräber are traditional graves beneath the ground, while Urnengräber are for cremated remains. In addition to the various tombstones and memorials, you’ll find one detail that stands out – the limited time graves remain. It is a custom in Germany that after a certain period, usually around 20 to 30 years, graves are leveled, and the space is used again. However, graves of fallen soldiers are kept up by the cemetery and remain forever. In these cases, the stories of these brave individuals are carried on even after the time has passed.
