Picture this Friedewald a tranquil village nestled in the Saxon countryside. Friedewald’s name itself whispers of a history rooted in peace. It means “peaceful forest” a fitting description for this once-isolated woodland settlement. Imagine a time long ago when Friedewald was not a village but a forest. A forest bordering the vast Dresdner Heide a boundary between ancient tribes.
Friedewald’s story begins much earlier than its first mention in 1292 as “Fridewalt”. Records show that its origins stretch back to the medieval era. The name evolved over time “Fridwald” in 1300 then “Frydewald” in 1387. This peaceful forest gradually transformed into two distinct settlements Dippelsdorf and Buchholz. Dippelsdorf a traditional farming village while Buchholz blossomed into a popular spa resort.
The growth of Buchholz around 1900 was astounding. Grand villas sprang up catering to visitors seeking relaxation and rejuvenation. Buchholz’s popularity quickly overshadowed Dippelsdorf leading to a significant change. In 1940 the two settlements were officially united under the name Friedewald.
Friedewald’s dual nature is evident even today. Dippelsdorf retains its agricultural charm while Buchholz echoes its spa past. The two are linked by a modern highway built around 2006. This new road connecting Großenhain and Meißen is a stark contrast to Friedewald’s history. Despite this modern intrusion Friedewald maintains its identity.
Friedewald was even officially designated a “State-recognized health resort” in 1955. The title lasted until 2005 and reflected Friedewald’s reputation as a tranquil retreat. Key attractions were the spa house and park in Buchholz and the lakeside beach in Dippelsdorf. The proximity of Radebeul’s famous Bilzbad further boosted its appeal as a place for relaxation and rest.
Today Friedewald is a part of the larger Moritzburg municipality. The incorporation occurred on January 1 1994. Just five years later Reichenberg itself joined Moritzburg completing the administrative story. Friedewald still thrives a beautiful mix of history tranquility and modern convenience. Its peaceful past lives on in its name a testament to its enduring charm.
