Built in 1955 the Friedenskirche stands as a testament to peace. Its name a poignant reminder of the recently concluded Second World War. This church in Bonn’s Kessenich district wasn’t always here. Before 1955 the Kessenich evangelical community worshipped at the Lutherkirche. After securing funding and land construction began in March 1954. Architect Rudolf Hellwag designed the building. His design won first place in a competition. The Bonner company Gemüngt & Schneider constructed the church.
On March 20 1955 the Friedenskirche opened. Heinrich Held the Präses of the Evangelical Church in Rhineland officiated. Theologian Renatus Hupfeld and local pastor Arnold Schumacher also participated. Choirs and soloists from the Thomanerchor Leipzig performed. The church’s octagonal design is unique. This reflects the Christian significance of the number eight. It symbolizes Christ’s resurrection. The building’s design also considered practicality. A large community hall was built next to the church. This was later demolished and replaced in 1994. The church’s striking stained-glass windows were designed by Hans Heinrich Adam. Karl Jörres’ workshop in Kessenich created the windows. They depict scenes from the Apostolic Creed and Christ’s life.
The altar the baptismal font and the pulpit are made of Baden shell limestone. The altar’s backdrop features black shell limestone. A tall light-colored maple cross stands before it. The church’s antependia were designed by Kurt Wolff. They symbolize biblical texts. The organ built in 1957 by the Cologne firm Willi Peter has been renovated. It has 31 stops across three manuals and pedal. It contains about 2000 pipes. The Friedenskirche’s bells were cast by Mabilon in Saarburg. They are named Faith Love and Hope. Each bell bears a Bible verse. Due to structural issues only the largest bell rings regularly. The smaller bells are chimed instead. The Friedenskirche’s choirs are renowned in the region. In 2009 the children’s choir performed Jesus Christ Superstar. This celebrated their tenth anniversary. The Friedenskirche continues to serve its community. It is a vibrant hub for faith music and fellowship. It remains a symbol of hope and peace in Bonn.
