“A chapel born from the ashes of war.” That’s the essence of the Friedenskapelle Kleinnaundorf. We stand before a testament to resilience, a symbol of hope erected in the newly formed German Democratic Republic. The Friedenskapelle Kleinnaundorf stands as one of the first sacred buildings constructed in East Germany after World War II. The community poured their hearts and souls into its creation in 1950. Imagine the collective effort, the shared vision, as the people of Kleinnaundorf came together to build this sanctuary. The Friedenskapelle Kleinnaundorf was consecrated on the third Sunday of Advent in 1950. Its name, “Friedenskapelle” meaning “Peace Chapel,” reflects the yearning for tranquility and healing after the tumultuous years of war. Inside the Friedenskapelle Kleinnaundorf, a woven wooden ceiling embraces the congregation. A magnificent altar cross, carved from oak, depicts scenes from Jesus’ life, a creation of the artist Brigitta Großmann-Lauterbach. A smaller community room adjoins the main worship area. It’s separated by sliding glass windows. Look for a unique wooden chandelier salvaged from the Hutschänke, a local tavern. Miners traditionally gathered there for a brief service before descending into the mines. The chapel’s bell has a story of its own. King Albert of Saxony gifted it to the community in 1898. It originally resided in a bell tower on Glockenplatz. In 1998, a new bell tower was constructed beside the Friedenskapelle Kleinnaundorf, providing a fitting home. In 2009, the Friedenskapelle welcomed a new addition. A refurbished organ, acquired from Oldenburg and funded through donations, the city of Freital, and the regional church, found its place within these walls. It blends harmoniously with the chapel’s ambiance, enhancing the spiritual atmosphere. The Friedenskapelle Kleinnaundorf, though modest in size, hosts weddings and other important life events. It serves as a vibrant hub for the community. The Friedenskapelle belongs to the Bannewitz parish within the Dresden-Mitte church district. It shares its grounds with the Kleinnaundorf cemetery, managed by the city of Freital. The Friedenskapelle Kleinnaundorf is more than just bricks and mortar. It embodies the spirit of community, resilience, and faith. It’s a place where history whispers and hope resonates.
