Built upon a legacy of vineyards, the Friedensburg stands proudly. The Friedensburg isn’t your typical castle. It’s a testament to peace, built between 1870 and 1871 by Ernst Louis Gießmann. This neo-Gothic marvel overlooks the Radebeul vineyards near Dresden. It’s a blend of history and architecture, perched high above the valley. The Friedensburg began its life as a simple vineyard in the 17th century. It also served as a Weinschank, a traditional wine tavern. Unfortunately, disaster struck in 1868. A fire ravaged the existing structure, leaving behind only remnants of its past. Gießmann, seeing an opportunity to create something extraordinary, enlisted the help of the Gebrüder Ziller construction company. They incorporated the surviving ruins into the new design. The year of completion, 1871, coincided with the end of the Franco-Prussian War. This led Gießmann to christen his new establishment “Friedensburg,” or “Peace Castle.” The name symbolizes a new era of tranquility and prosperity. The Friedensburg, with its panoramic views, quickly became a popular destination. In 1895 it transitioned into a hotel. Later additions included a veranda in 1896 and a terrace in 1902. The Stübner family took ownership in 1914. They continued to operate the Friedensburg until it was leased to the HO (Handelsorganisation), the state-owned trade organization of East Germany, in 1963. It then served various purposes, including a guesthouse for Druckmaschinenwerke Planeta and a training and vacation center for Baumechanisierung Halle. The Friedensburg eventually returned to private ownership in 1990 after the German reunification. It has since undergone renovations and transformations, including a facade restoration and interior modernization. Today, the Friedensburg stands as a symbol of resilience. It offers a glimpse into Radebeul’s rich history and the enduring spirit of its people.
