“Demolish it!” That’s what they wanted to do with this building. But the Fridley Historical Society stepped in to save it. Welcome to the Fridley History Center. It stands as a testament to Fridley’s commitment to preserving its past.
The Fridley History Center started as Fridley District 23 School. It was built in 1931 on the C. A. Nelson Tipperary Farm pasture. Later, in 1950, Hayes Elementary School was built next door and the school became known as Hayes Annex.
But time marches on. By 1985, the old schoolhouse faced demolition. The newly formed Fridley Historical Society intervened. In 1987, they leased the building at 611 Mississippi Street. They transformed it into a historical museum. The museum was dedicated in 1989.
Inside the Fridley History Center, history comes alive. The main floor classrooms now serve as exhibit spaces. They are filled with artifacts and publications representing Fridley’s history. One room recreates an original 1930s schoolroom. Can you imagine learning your lessons here?
Venture to the upper level. There, you’ll find a timeline of Fridley’s history. Another wall displays photographs of Fridley’s commercial buildings from 1949. That was the year Fridley became a village. A large exhibit showcases the devastating 1965 tornado. See aerial photos from 1953 and 1964. They show Fridley’s transformation from rural farmland to a growing city. The tornado changed everything.
The Fridley History Center is Anoka County’s only local community museum. Dedicated volunteers staff it. Admission is free. Explore exhibits honoring Fridley’s public safety personnel. Remember community members who served in the military. Reflect on the redesigned 1965 Tornado Display. It shows the destruction and aftermath. Don’t miss the Embers Restaurant display in the basement meeting room.
The Fridley Historical Society relies on community support. They are a nonprofit organization that receives no public funding. Memberships and local fundraisers keep the museum running. Events include an annual lasagna dinner, raffle, and live auction. There is also an annual meeting, and a Fridley Hall of Fame Dinner. A Kindergarten Holiday Art Fair also takes place here.
