“A city like this, it’s beautiful, but also cruel, isn’t it?” The Friche de La Folie-Saint-Lazare is a plot of land in Paris. It is a place where dreams are born and can die very quickly, a place where you can feel the pulse of the city but also a place that is forgotten.
Standing in front of it, right in the middle of the city buzz, you might not notice it at first. It looks like an ordinary plot, but in 1975, it was the center of a huge urban planning project: the ZAC des Tuileries. The project, which would have brought a new, modern look to the neighborhood of La Folie, was abandoned when the City of Paris ran out of money. The project was stopped, and the area was left untouched. But today, people talk about the “ruins” as though the project had been completed and the site was abandoned.
