A chilling question hangs in the air at Fresque Montluc – Jean Moulin Mural: How do you depict suffering on such a grand scale? This 800 square meter mural in Lyon’s 3rd arrondissement, also known as the Fresque “Montluc – Jean Moulin,” doesn’t shy away from this difficult task. It confronts the grim history of Montluc Prison, a place of detention during World War II and still in use today. The Fresque Montluc – Jean Moulin Mural serves as a somber reminder of Lyon’s role as a center of the Resistance. It honors those who were imprisoned and executed within these walls. The mural extends over 300 meters. It incorporates the existing memorial for the deported and executed Lyonnais. Two children, depicted in black and white, bookend the mural. On the left, they represent the era of the 1940s. On the right, they reappear in vibrant color, symbolizing the transition to the 2000s. At the heart of the Fresque Montluc – Jean Moulin Mural is Jean Moulin himself. He is set against a backdrop of Van Gogh’s “Wheatfield with Crows,” a poignant choice given the artist’s own struggles and the painting’s association with his final days. Woven throughout the mural are the names of detainees, spelled out in barbed wire. This serves as a stark reminder of the countless individuals who perished during this dark period. An enormous slate, marked with lines representing each day spent in detention, powerfully evokes the agonizing passage of time for those imprisoned. CitéCréation, a Lyon-based artists’ cooperative, created the mural in 1999 after consulting with local residents. They wanted to find a sensitive way to represent the difficult topic of deportation and suffering in Lyon during the war. The Fresque Montluc – Jean Moulin Mural stands as a powerful testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the enduring importance of remembrance.
