Oullins: Capital of French murals. This is how many call this city. We are standing before the Fresque Du Pont d’Oullins Mural. It is a testament to Oullins’ vibrant artistic spirit.
This mural is located on the Pont d’Oullins. The Yzeron river flows beneath this bridge. The Fresque Du Pont d’Oullins Mural is a stunning example of trompe-l’œil art. It features a locomotive. You can also spot a fisherman here. Can you see the bouliste? A bouliste is a person who plays boules. There is also a weaver depicted. Children are at the windows. A basketball player is displayed. A guitarist adds a musical touch. And finally, some dancers complete the scene.
CitéCréation created this mural. This is a cooperative known for its murals. In 1992, CitéCréation painted a mural in Barcelona. It was called La Fresque des Balcons de Barcelone. It included 30 celebrated painters. Inspired by this work, Lyon contracted Cité de la Création. They wished to represent the city’s history in a similar way.
CitéCréation has a rich history. It began in 1978. A group of art students disagreed with the Beaux-Arts school’s teaching. They believed art should be accessible to everyone. This led to the formation of CitéCréation.
One of Oullins’ first murals was created in 1982. It was designed by Populart. This group later became CitéCréation in 1983. This early work is the Fresque de la Renaissance. It represents a birth above a railway workshop. Over a thousand Oullinois helped design the wall. They shared stories and memories. The mural features vivid colours. In 2013, the mural’s style changed slightly. But its essence remained.
Unfortunately, the SNCF workshops at Mulatière no longer exist. The walls have been tagged with graffiti. The Technicentre d’Oullins has moved to Vénissieux.
The Fresque Du Pont d’Oullins Mural captures life’s many facets. It is both artistic and historical. Take a moment to appreciate the details and stories. It reflects Oullins’ unique character.
