Hidden within Bonn lies a green oasis, a place of tranquility and amusement: Freizeitpark Rheinaue. Freizeitpark Rheinaue isn’t just a park. It’s a testament to Bonn’s history, a vibrant tapestry woven with threads of nature, culture, and recreation. Originally, this area was a natural floodplain forest. However, due to river straightening and increased shipping traffic on the Rhine, the forest diminished considerably. Freizeitpark Rheinaue was officially completed for the Federal Horticultural Show in 1979. After the 178-day event concluded, the park was gifted to the people of Bonn. Today, this 160-hectare expanse, including 35 hectares on the right bank of the Rhine, is almost as large as Bonn’s city center. One of Freizeitpark Rheinaue’s most popular attractions is the 15-hectare Auensee lake. Six pontoon bridges gracefully arch across the water, inviting visitors to stroll across and admire the views. At the lake’s heart lies an island, a protected sanctuary for diverse bird species. Another gem nestled within Freizeitpark Rheinaue is the Japanese Garden. A gift from the Japanese government, this garden was designed by Dr. Akira Sato. He was the president of the Japanese landscape gardeners association. Two cascading waterfalls, a serene lake, and a thirteen-tiered pagoda create an atmosphere of harmony and tranquility. For those seeking a more active pursuit, the park boasts a minigolf course with a unique theme: “The Rhine Pirates.” Eighteen challenging holes await, featuring spectacular obstacles and a sandy beach area for a touch of vacation flair. Freizeitpark Rheinaue also has a reconstructed apiary. It offers educational opportunities for school groups and beekeepers alike. Visitors can learn about honey and wax production and the vital role bees play in horticulture. Freizeitpark Rheinaue even houses remnants of ancient history. The Roman Street exhibits 26 casts of Roman tombstones and altars. These were discovered in the Rhineland. Near the cascading waterfall and the Spoon Forest sculpture, these historical echoes provide a glimpse into Bonn’s rich past. From its inception as a floodplain forest to its transformation into a beloved recreational space, Freizeitpark Rheinaue stands as a symbol of Bonn’s enduring connection to nature and its commitment to creating a vibrant community space.
