The Freiwillige Feuerwehr Leipzig-Ost has a unique story. It began in 1992. Two volunteer fire departments, Leipzig-Nordost and Leipzig-Südost, joined forces. This merger created a stronger, more versatile fire fighting force. The newly formed Feuerwehr first occupied the former East fire station of the professional fire brigade. They shared the space with their professional colleagues.
Shortly after, they moved again. This time, it was to the Messewache on the old exhibition grounds. Finally, in May 1997, they found their permanent home. It was after two years of renovations, at Gerichtsweg. This location has its own history. The original East fire station opened here in July 1894. It was the fourth district fire station. From 1950 to early 1992, the police used the building. Restitution claims allowed the fire department to reclaim it.
Today, the Freiwillige Feuerwehr Leipzig-Ost does more than fight fires. They specialize in handling hazardous materials. They have an exploration vehicle and a decontamination vehicle. These resources are vital for handling dangerous substances. The members are part of the “Analytical Task Force” (ATF) of the federal government in Leipzig. They can be deployed throughout central Germany. In special cases, they assist nationwide during major emergencies. They have powerful technology. This supports local forces.
The Freiwillige Feuerwehr Leipzig-Ost consists of 49 active members. Three of them are women. The youth fire department includes 23 children and teenagers. The senior and honorary division has twelve members. The firefighters respond to about 500 calls a year.
This fire station also handles an important secondary task. The firefighters provide fire safety watch services. These services are used at events throughout Leipzig.
