“Is that smoke?” a child’s voice called out, pointing towards the Freiwillige Feuerwehr Leipzig-Grünau. It was a common sight, the flicker of training exercises or the sudden rush of engines responding to a call. The Freiwillige Feuerwehr Leipzig-Grünau, established in October 1975 as Freiwillige Feuerwehr Leipzig-West, has been a cornerstone of the community for decades. Initially housed in the Leutzscher Rathaus, the fire station found its permanent home on Schönauer Straße in 1986. This location continues to serve as the heart of their operations, a familiar beacon of safety and service. The firefighters of Freiwillige Feuerwehr Leipzig-Grünau are more than just local heroes. They are integral to the daily defense against danger. They play a vital role in the hazardous materials exploration team, utilizing their specialized Erkundungskraftwagen (reconnaissance vehicle). Their expertise extends beyond the immediate community. The Freiwillige Feuerwehr Leipzig-Grünau is also part of the Federal “Analytical Task Force” (ATF) located in Leipzig. This specialized training allows them to respond to major incidents across Central Germany, and even the entire country, equipped with powerful measurement and sampling technology. They provide crucial support to local forces in times of crisis. This dedicated team comprises 36 active members, including three women, embodying the spirit of volunteerism and community service. Their ranks are further strengthened by a robust youth fire brigade of 33 children and teenagers, ensuring the future of fire safety in the region. A respected group of ten members forms the veterans and honorary department, carrying a wealth of experience and tradition. The Freiwillige Feuerwehr Leipzig-Grünau isn’t just a fire station.
