The Freilichtbühne Junge Garde opened its gates on August 12 1955. It was originally conceived as an open-air theater. The venue was named “Junge Garde”. This translates to “Young Guard”. It quickly became a hub for entertainment. Families flocked to enjoy the shows.
Before 1989 the Freilichtbühne Junge Garde primarily hosted family programs. It also presented entertainment events. The 1980s saw a shift. Rock concerts and film screenings became part of the lineup. After the reunification of Germany the focus changed again. Concerts featuring popular music took center stage.

In 2009 Bernd Aust stepped in. He is a concert promoter Schlachthof-Chef and electra-Musiker. Aust initially leased the venue for two years.
Aust invested in renovations. He upgraded the artists’ dressing rooms and sanitary facilities. Aust also rented a stage for open-air concerts. In 2011 Aust secured a four-year lease extension. He further invested in a more stable stage. The new stage could support heavier lighting and sound equipment. The original stage had a load capacity of only three tons. It was insufficient for modern concert productions.
The Freilichtbühne Junge Garde is easily accessible. You can reach it by bus or train. The Karcherallee stop is served by tram lines 1 and 2. Bus line 63 also stops there. The Tiergartenstraße stop is served by bus lines 61 63 and 85. Parking is limited around the venue. Public transportation is recommended. Larger public parking lots are available. You can find them near the Hygiene Museum and the Dynamo Dresden stadium.
