“Did anyone lose their signal?” What seems like a casual joke takes on a different meaning here at Freightliner Portobello. Freightliner Portobello isn’t your typical landmark. It’s a lattice tower, a giant communication hub sending and receiving signals across the city. Opened in 1968, Freightliner Portobello served as Edinburgh’s bustling freight terminal. This wasn’t just any terminal. It was a gateway to Europe, with the Euro-Scot service launching from here, connecting to the Dover-Calais ferry via the Stratford Freightliner Terminal. By the late 1970s, Freightliner Portobello was a hive of activity, handling an astounding 2,700 containers every single month. Sadly, its lifespan was shorter than many hoped. In 1987, Freightliner Portobello was controversially closed, a decision met with much resistance. This closure, however, paved the way for a significant re-alignment of the main railway line. Today, though silent in terms of the roar of freight trains, Freightliner Portobello speaks volumes in the digital age. It stands as a testament to the evolution of industry and the ever-changing landscape of communication.
