Picture the Freie Waldorfschule Mainz a beacon of progressive education in Mainz Germany. This isn’t just any school. It’s a place steeped in history and innovation a testament to the enduring legacy of Rudolf Steiner. Founded on September 2 1979 it was the first Waldorf school in Rhineland-Palatinate. The multi-purpose sports hall also doubles as an auditorium and event space.

Over the years more buildings were added. In 2004 the upper school wing opened. This gave space for grades 9-13 a new music room an eurythmy hall a computer lab and even a room for the Anthroposophical Society of Mainz. Further expansions in 2007 provided additional space for the all-day school. The schoolyard underwent a transformation too. A large adventure playground was added with swings slides climbing frames and balance beams. The most recent addition the Kunsthaus was finished in 2015. It provides two large art studios a classroom and a supplementary room. Today the Freie Waldorfschule Mainz boasts a sprawling campus a testament to its ongoing success and commitment. The school has a large garden tended by the students. A Waldorf kindergarten called Zauberwald is located on the school grounds.

The Freie Waldorfschule Mainz isn’t just bricks and mortar. It’s a vibrant community. It currently serves around 410 students in 13 classes supported by approximately 50 teachers and staff members. It’s a place where students benefit from a holistic education. Its 40th anniversary was celebrated in 2019. The school participated in various events throughout the year. These events were part of celebrations for the centennial of Waldorf pedagogy. Students participated in the Waldorf 100 relay race a youth parade and the Gutenberg Marathon. They held a ceremony at the Electoral Palace. Lectures and seminars were held. There were cabaret performances and a big celebration for the school’s anniversary.
