Perhaps you’ve noticed the unique architecture. Here stands the Freie Waldorfschule Kassel. It’s a place where education embraces the whole child. This school isn’t just about textbooks. It’s about fostering creativity and practical skills.

The Freie Waldorfschule Kassel has a rich history. It was founded in 1929. A group of people wanted a school like the Freie Waldorfschule in Stuttgart. These members of the Anthroposophical Society in Kassel founded the “Freie Schule Kassel”. They aimed to develop a school based on Rudolf Steiner’s educational approach.

Initially, classes were small. Six children were taught in a private home. By 1930, the Freie Waldorfschule Kassel opened on Ulmenstrasse 24. There were 116 students in four classes. The school quickly grew. Within a year, it had 150 students. The Freie Waldorfschule Kassel was the eighth Waldorf school in Germany.

Self-governance was key. Marie Kruse, a faculty member, held the school’s concession. The “Freie Schule Kassel e.V.” was the supporting organization. In 1932, more space was needed. Some classes moved to another building.

The Nazi era brought challenges. Despite opposition, the school thrived. But tensions rose. The government accused the Freie Waldorfschule Kassel of promoting international goals. Still, most parents stood by the school.

In 1938, the Freie Waldorfschule Kassel faced closure. The government forbade the continuation of the 10th grade into the 11th. The school had to close. The faculty stated that the responsibility for the closure rests on those who caused it through their measures. A teacher proclaimed “It is a law that what dies, will be resurrected.”

After World War II, the school re-emerged. In 1946, classes resumed in a restaurant. Seventy students aged 7 to 14 attended. Later, classes were held in other locations. By the late 1940s, the Freie Waldorfschule Kassel had 200 students.

A permanent home was secured. In 1948, the school bought a house on Brabanter Strasse. Parents and teachers raised the money. Public funding didn’t exist yet.

The Freie Waldorfschule Kassel expanded. In 1949, a second 5th grade was added. This began the school’s parallel class system. In 1955, the first 13th grade class graduated. By 1956, 700 students were in the house.

A new building was needed. In 1958, the cornerstone was laid on Hunrodstrasse. Today you walk over the cornerstone when entering the Kleine Saal. Fest- und Turnhalle and Bauabschnitt A opened in 1959. The Freie Waldorfschule Kassel continued to grow. Additional buildings followed in the early 1960s.

The Freie Waldorfschule Kassel integrated vocational training. In 1969, students could study education, metal and electrics.

Today, the Freie Waldorfschule Kassel continues to evolve. It offers education from Class 1 to 10. It integrates general education with vocational training. The Freie Waldorfschule Kassel prepares students for various paths. Graduates include carpenters, mechanics and social workers. Some pursue academic studies.

The Freie Waldorfschule Kassel stands as a testament to resilience. It embodies a commitment to holistic education. It nurtures students’ minds and spirits.
