Standing here today, what if I told you this building embodies a unique approach to education? This is the Freie Waldorfschule Bremen. It is more than just a school. It’s a place where artistic expression meets academic rigor.

Founded after World War II, the Freie Waldorfschule Bremen first started in 1949. It was located in the Holzhafen in Walle. The school moved several times. In 1972, it found its permanent home here on Touler Straße in Schwachhausen. The foundation stone was laid on December 2, 1972. The first day of school in the new building was November 19, 1974.

The architectural design reflects the Waldorf educational philosophy. The school building was designed by the Arbeitsgruppe Plastisch Organisches Bauen. Werner Seyfert led this group. The design team collaborated closely with the faculty. This ensured that the architecture supported the school’s unique pedagogy.

Notice the different shapes of the classrooms. Depending on the age group, rooms are round or polygonal. Each room has a unique color scheme. The school’s layout encourages a sense of community. The Festsaal stands as the heart of the school. Its distinctive roof construction makes it special. It hosts many festivals and gatherings.

The Freie Waldorfschule Bremen is a one-track school. It integrates all classes from 1 to 12, plus the 13th grade Abitur class. The school welcomes students into any class throughout the year. It offers care in its own after-school center. Lunch is provided in the school kitchen.

What makes the Freie Waldorfschule Bremen special? Core subjects are enhanced with artistic and manual arts. These include bookbinding, weaving and gardening. Students also learn woodworking and sculpting. Choir and orchestra are also offered. Class plays in grades 8 and 12 are important events. They build a strong class community.

Waldorf education extends beyond the classroom. Students participate in a multi-week agricultural internship. This takes place on an organic farm. Exchange programs with partner schools in France and Russia are offered. Students participate in a surveying internship. They conclude their studies with an art trip. Destinations include Italy or Greece. They gain individual experience through internships. These are in crafts and social work in the upper grades. They also complete a year-long project.

The Freie Waldorfschule Bremen stages impressive theatrical productions. These include classics like Dürrenmatt’s “The Visit of the Old Lady”. Students handle all aspects. This includes acting, set design, and stage technology. They also perform musicals. Past productions include “The Apple Comp(l)ott,” a multilingual musical. The school also has a circus, Zirkus Tourelli. They put on shows like “Sani – The Journey to Happiness”.

In 1996, the building was listed as a historical monument. It is an example of Expressionism and 1970s modernism in Bremen. The Freie Waldorfschule Bremen is easily accessible. Tram lines 1 and 4 stop at Metzer Straße. Bus lines 22 and 24 stop at Verdunstraße.
