The first Freie evangelische Gemeinde in Germany was founded in 1854. Hermann Heinrich Grafe played a key role. He was a merchant from Wuppertal. He encountered the “Église évangélique libre” during a stay in Lyon. He realized the importance of God’s free grace. It was the focus of the Christian message. It was the starting point for a community of believers. They gathered around communion and were active in social missions.
Back in Wuppertal, he tried to implement his insights. He worked in the Reformed Church in Wuppertal-Elberfeld. He failed because of the church’s reality. He felt compelled to form a Gemeinde based on biblical criteria.
In 1874, several community groups joined together. They formed a Bund Freier evangelischer Gemeinden. The Freie evangelische Gemeinde Ettlingen is part of this association. It offers a welcoming community. It strengthens faith in everyday life.
