You might be surprised to know that the story of this church began far from the bustling streets of Munich, in a city called Nuremberg. In 1963, Germany had only one Freie evangelische Gemeinde, located in Nuremberg. Its pastor, Hermann Schönberg, felt a growing need to establish a Freie evangelische Gemeinde in Munich, a city experiencing a large influx of people from North and West Germany, many of whom were familiar with Freie evangelische Gemeinden. A serendipitous encounter on a train solidified this vision. A member of the Nuremberg congregation noticed a train conductor reading a Bible. This simple act led to an invitation, a newfound faith, and the conductor’s desire to help establish a Freie evangelische Gemeinde in Munich. The first gatherings of the Freie evangelische Gemeinde in Munich took place in a conference room near the main train station, facilitated by the conductor. Initially, attendance was sparse, with rarely more than 15 people present. In 1964, the decision was made to hold gatherings in a larger venue.
