A faint scent of tar and old wood hangs in the air. This is Fregatten Jylland. One of the world’s longest wooden ships awaits you.

Launched in 1860, Fregatten Jylland was a marvel of its time. It was a warship. It had 44 cannons. It also boasted a steam engine. This cutting-edge hybrid could harness both wind and coal power. Fregatten Jylland was Denmark’s fastest vessel clocking 14 knots in 1864.

Imagine life aboard Fregatten Jylland. Picture the 437 sailors going about their duties. Many were conscripts. They had never been to sea. Strict discipline was the rule. Sailors spent hours in cannon and rifle drills. They learned to maintain the ship. Cleanliness was next to godliness. Free time was scarce. Sailors wrote letters. Some even dared to sneak a nap. A favorite pastime involved tricking new recruits. They were sent high into the rigging to kiss the masthead. Privacy was a luxury with so many men. Solace could only be found high above on the masts.

Fregatten Jylland saw action during the Second Schleswig War. In 1864, it participated in the Battle of Helgoland. The Danish fleet engaged Austrian ships. “Jylland” sustained damage. One cannon took a direct hit. Many were killed or maimed. Despite the victory, the battle did not change the war’s outcome.

After the war, Fregatten Jylland served as a training ship. It also sailed to the West Indies. It represented Denmark in the region. In 1874, Fregatten Jylland became a royal yacht. King Christian IX traveled to Iceland. A royal residence was built on deck. It even included a modern water closet.

The proud ship survived and now resides in its dry dock in Ebeltoft.

Today, you can explore Fregatten Jylland. Feel the history. Smell the tar mixed with lavender from the royal chambers. See the craftsmen at work. They preserve this national treasure. You can explore different decks. Find Karl’s stolen pocket knife.

The Fregatten Jylland stands as a testament to a bygone era. It shows naval power. It also shows the lives of the men who sailed her. Come aboard. Let the stories of Fregatten Jylland wash over you.
