Twenty-four souls sought solace. Disillusioned and burdened they gathered in 1974. It was at the home of Brother and Sister Don E King. This humble beginning marked the birth of the Freedom Missionary Baptist Church. Right here in Dallas Texas this church found its roots.
Freedom Missionary Baptist Church wasn’t born in a grand cathedral. It began in a home. A testament to faith and perseverance. It was a place of prayer and supplication. The Lord’s blessings were stored but needed matching faith. This small gathering birthed not only a church but also a long-awaited minister.
Reverend M T Flemmings named the church aptly. Freedom to worship without fear. Freedom guided by the Holy Spirit. Freedom to hold steadfast to sound doctrine. These were the pillars of this new congregation.
The church’s early years were a journey. From Mrs O M Bowman’s Dallas home to Alta Mesa. Then to the People’s El Shaddai Village. This community center became a temporary sanctuary. Yet the church continued to grow even in unconventional spaces. Approximately 60 souls found Christ.
Eventually Freedom Missionary Baptist Church found a more permanent home at 9021 South R L Thornton Freeway. Membership surged. The church thrived. The church celebrated milestones. Births weddings graduations. Even through hard times and loss the church held firm.
Then came June 17 1979. A new chapter unfolded. A new facility at 3715 South Westmoreland Road. A larger space to worship God. A new place to strive for His will. The Freedom Missionary Baptist Church continues to thrive. It stands as a testament to its founders faith and vision. It’s a living embodiment of the freedom it represents.
