Imagine standing at the intersection of South Phillips Avenue and 75th Street in Chicago. Right before your eyes, there’s an unassuming brick building with a simple sign that reads “Free Salvation M.B. Church.” Now, what you may not know is that this building is more than just a place of worship. It is a historical landmark, a testament to faith and resilience, and the embodiment of a community that refused to be denied.

Free Salvation M.B. Church stands as a symbol of hope and perseverance. The history of this church is intricately woven with the story of its founder, Rev. Winfield Phillips. In 1976, on Palm Sunday, he and 16 other believers came together to form Free Salvation M.B. Church. Their first home was a tiny storefront located at 7431 South Chicago Avenue. But as the congregation grew, they needed a larger space.

The Lord provided, and they were able to acquire a vacant chapel at 1420 East 87th Street. However, zoning issues forced them to relocate once again. It was then that Rev. Phillips, guided by the Lord, found a new home for Free Salvation M.B. Church – the very building you see before you. They found solid ground at 7549 South Phillips Avenue. Today, this church continues to serve as a spiritual haven and a center for community outreach.

The Free Salvation M.B. Church holds a special place in the hearts of its members. It has been a beacon of hope in the midst of challenging times. Not only has this church witnessed the rise and fall of neighborhoods, but also the changes of the times. The church, in its humble beginnings, has stood firm through hardship, through the relocation of many of its members, through decades of service, and through the changing landscape of the South Side.

Over the years, Free Salvation M.B. Church has seen many different pastors lead their flock. In 1995, when Rev. Phillips’ health took a turn, it was Rev. Derrick Branch who stepped up to guide the church in his absence. This led to Rev. Branch serving as overseer until Rev. Phillips recuperated. In more recent years, after Rev. Phillips’ health again forced him to take a step back from ministry, the church found itself in the care of Rev. Louis D. Jones. During his time as pastor, he played a pivotal role in ensuring the church thrived.

From 1976 until now, Free Salvation M.B. Church has seen many changes. Despite the challenges, the church has remained strong. Many people have found solace and strength in their faith, thanks to the work of Free Salvation M.B. Church. This historic church stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith. It serves as a constant reminder that even in the face of adversity, there is always hope. It is the embodiment of a small community banding together, sharing their faith and strength. The church remains a source of strength and inspiration, a place where hope flourishes.
