Gazing up at Frederiksholm Kirke, have you ever wondered about its nickname, “The Marble Church”? It’s a bit of a misnomer. While the original vision did involve a magnificent marble structure, the reality is a bit more complex. Frederiksholm Kirke, also known as Frederiks Kirke, sits majestically in the Frederiksstaden district of Copenhagen. It was intended as a grand tribute to 300 years of Oldenburg rule, a project initiated by King Frederik V himself. The foundation stone was laid in 1749, with architect Nicolai Eigtved dreaming of a lavish rococo masterpiece. Imagine a dome even larger than the one we see today, soaring high above the city. Sadly, Eigtved’s ambitious plans were doomed. Budget cuts and his death in 1754 brought construction to a grinding halt. A French architect, Nicolas-Henri Jardin, stepped in, shifting the design to a more classical style. But the financial woes continued, and by 1770, the project was abandoned, leaving Frederiksholm Kirke as a mere ruin for nearly 150 years. Enter Carl Frederik Tietgen, a 19th-century industrialist. He purchased the ruins in 1874 with a vision to complete the church, albeit with a few adjustments. Tietgen, a practical man, opted for limestone from nearby Faxe Kalkbrud instead of expensive Norwegian marble. Architect Ferdinand Meldahl incorporated the existing marble walls, blending them with the new limestone structure and topping it with a magnificent dome inspired by St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Finally, in 1894, Frederiksholm Kirke was completed and opened to the public. Today, its limestone facade gleams in the Copenhagen sun, a testament to resilience and a fascinating blend of architectural styles.
