Built between 1958 and 1960 Fredenskirken stands as a testament to peace. This Aarhus church’s name Fredenskirken means Peace Church. It reflects the hope for peace after World War II. The church is located in Viby a district south of Aarhus city center.

Architects F Niclasen and Aksel Skov designed Fredenskirken. The original design included a main church room. There was also a small wing for storage and offices. A freestanding tower completed the design. However the church has undergone several renovations. In 1986 the adjoining wing got a new saddle roof. In 1990 a new red brick facade was added. The tower received a copper roof and a porch was built at the main entrance. A new wing with offices was added in 1997. This enclosed the church tower in a courtyard.

Fredenskirken is more than just a place of worship. It’s a community hub. It features a church room a chapel and community facilities. The church has a modern design built of red brick. It serves a parish population of over 7000 people. This makes it a vital part of the Viby community. It’s not only connected to its local community. Fredenskirken maintains a unique friendship. It shares a warm relationship with a Catholic church in Pesaro Italy. Regular visits between the two congregations strengthen this bond.

The interior of Fredenskirken is equally captivating. The altar and baptismal font are made of light granite. A cast iron cross stands on the altar. It was created by Gudrun Steenberg. She also made a relief under the mosaic window. The altar cloth is woven by Esther Bové Reintoft. It is based on a design by John Sparre Christensen. The church’s organ built by Frederiksborg Orgelbyggeri in 1962 boasts 20 voices. The east gable window features a stunning glass mosaic by Mogens Jørgensen added in 1965. This adds to the church’s visual splendor.

Fredenskirken in Aarhus is more than just a building. It is a living symbol of peace and community. A place where faith hope and friendship intertwine. A place where history and modernity blend seamlessly. A place worth exploring and experiencing.
