From a former entertainment venue to a house of worship, Fredens Kirke has a unique story. Fredens Kirke stands on Ryesgade in the Østerbro district of Copenhagen. The church sits at the end of a small, almost hidden side street off Ryesgade. This location adds to its charm. In the late 19th century, this very spot housed the Sortedamslund entertainment establishment. Imagine the lively atmosphere, the music, and the laughter that once filled these walls. In 1898, the Kirkefondet (Church Fund) purchased the building with the intention of transforming it into a church. This decision sparked controversy, particularly among the more conservative members of the Church of Denmark. The transformation, overseen by architect Ludvig Knudsen, was completed in 1900. Fredens Kirke officially opened its doors on November 18th of that year. The church’s story doesn’t end there. In 1906, a transept and tower were added. These additions, designed by the renowned architect Martin Nyrop, further enhanced the church’s unique character. Look closely at the tower. You’ll notice the distinct red and grey brickwork, a design element inspired by traditional Danish village churches. The interior of Fredens Kirke is simple yet elegant. The original decoration by Johan N. Schrødder has been painted over, but traces of the building’s past life as an entertainment venue still remain. Look for remnants of a bowling alley and a dumbwaiter, hidden reminders of a bygone era. The original altarpiece, a terracotta figure of Christ framed by Corinthian columns, has been replaced with a wooden cross by Erik Ellegaard Frederiksen. The original figure now resides in the church’s vestibule. Fredens Kirke’s journey from a place of entertainment to a place of worship reflects the ever-evolving landscape of Copenhagen. Its history, etched into its walls, offers a glimpse into the city’s vibrant past.
