Gazing at the Frauenlob-Barke, can you hear the echoes of a medieval melody? This brass sculpture, placed here in 1981, commemorates Heinrich von Meissen, known as Frauenlob, a prominent German poet of the 14th century. Frauenlob, meaning “Praise of Ladies,” was his stage name, earned, perhaps, in a poetic duel defending the honorific “Frau” (lady) over “Weib” (woman). Born in Meissen, Germany around 1260, Frauenlob’s life was a melody of wandering minstrelsy and courtly patronage. He travelled, composing for royalty and nobility, from Prague to Mainz. He eventually settled in Mainz around 1312 under the patronage of Archbishop Peter von Aspelt. Frauenlob is considered a bridge between the aristocratic minnesingers and the middle-class meistersingers. He adapted the courtly love traditions of minnesang to explore complex themes like theology, science, and philosophy. His most famous work, the “Marienleich” (Mary’s Song), is a testament to his skill, weaving religious imagery and philosophical allusions into a complex tapestry of praise for the Virgin Mary. Legend says the women of Mainz, touched by his chivalrous devotion, carried his bier to the Mainz Cathedral upon his death in 1318. The Frauenlob-Barke symbolizes this procession, imagining the poet’s journey down the Rhine, his songs perhaps carried on the wind. It’s a whimsical tribute to a poet who celebrated women, a fitting memorial to Frauenlob’s enduring legacy.
