Hidden within the sprawling grounds of Mainz’s Hauptfriedhof lies the poignant Französischer Garnisonsfriedhof. This often-overlooked sanctuary holds the stories of French soldiers who died in Mainz during the Allied occupation of the Rhineland, from 1919 to 1930. The Französischer Garnisonsfriedhof, established in 1919, spans approximately 6,000 square meters. A towering 14-meter sandstone obelisk dominates the Französischer Garnisonsfriedhof. At its base, a sculpted angel, solemnly bearing a French steel helmet, stands guard. This moving monument, designed in 1925 by sculptor Louis Henri Nicot, bears an inscription: “L’ARMEE RHIN. AUX SOLDATS FRANCAIS MORTS EN PAYS RHENANS,” a tribute to the French soldiers who lost their lives in the Rhineland. The Französischer Garnisonsfriedhof is more than just a cemetery. It’s a microcosm of the French military presence in Mainz during a turbulent period. The 600 unassuming gravestones scattered around the obelisk mark the final resting places of members of the French army. Among them lie 400 colonial soldiers, stationed in Mainz. Some of these gravestones bear a crescent moon, a silent testament to the diverse faiths within the French forces, including soldiers of the Muslim faith. The Französischer Garnisonsfriedhof is a place of quiet contemplation. It allows us to reflect not only on the lives lost but also on the complex history of Mainz, a city that has seen its share of occupations and transitions. Just a short walk from the Französischer Garnisonsfriedhof, you’ll find the Deutscher Ehrenhof, a memorial dedicated to the citizens of Mainz who fell during the First World War, erected just three years after the French cemetery. The proximity of these two memorials serves as a powerful reminder of the devastating impact of war on all sides, and the importance of remembrance.
