“Here a truly New Zealand literature had its beginnings” reads the inscription on the Frank Sargeson Plaque. This unassuming plaque marks a significant spot in Auckland’s literary history. It’s not just a plaque it’s a portal to the life and work of Frank Sargeson. One of New Zealand’s most celebrated authors.

Standing here we’re at 14A Esmonde Road Takapuna. This was Sargeson’s home for over fifty years. From May 1931 until his death in 1982. He didn’t just live here he wrote here. He created his best-known short stories and novels within these walls.

Imagine the scene. A simple fibrolite cottage. Built in 1948 by Sargeson’s friend George Haydn. A modest structure designed for economy. The dimensions were determined by the size of standard asbestos fibrolite sheets. The most economical cladding material available at the time. The roof was corrugated asbestos fibrolite a shed-style mono-pitched roof. Exposed rafter ends added to its simple aesthetic.

Inside the cottage heart rimu timber formed the flooring. Custom-built bookshelves lined the walls. A wide shelf served as a writing table. Perfect for Sargeson’s minimalist style. A kauri bench sat in the tiny kitchen. Divan beds provided comfortable spaces. One in the bedroom another in the living area.

Sargeson wasn’t just a writer he was a gardener too. He grew vegetables in the garden. He entertained friends and fellow writers. His home became a hub for New Zealand’s literary community. Authors like Janet Frame found shelter and support here. Frame even lived in a former army hut on the property. She wrote her first novel Owls Do Cry there. Sargeson’s home was more than just a house. It was a catalyst for New Zealand literature.

After Sargeson’s death his ashes were scattered under a loquat tree in the garden. The ashes of Chris Cathcart another significant figure in New Zealand theatre are also believed to be there. The Frank Sargeson Trust now owns and preserves this historic home. A testament to Sargeson’s legacy and the rich history that unfolded within these humble walls. This plaque is a small but powerful reminder of the extraordinary life and work of Frank Sargeson and the impact he had on New Zealand literature. A place where the everyday became extraordinary. Where words bloomed and a new literary landscape took shape.
