This plaque on All Saints Road is much more than just a piece of metal with some words etched on it. It’s a gateway to a fascinating story of a man who struggled for equality and helped change the face of Notting Hill.

The Frank Crichlow plaque commemorates a man who was a true pioneer. Frank Crichlow was not just a restauranteur and a community organiser, but also a human rights campaigner. He arrived in Britain from Trinidad in the 1950s as part of the Windrush generation. The life he built here was not easy but he worked tirelessly to create a better life for himself and his community.

In 1968, Crichlow opened the Mangrove Restaurant, which quickly became a hub for the growing Black community in Notting Hill. The Mangrove not only served delicious food but also offered a safe space for people from all backgrounds to gather, discuss, and share their stories.

Crichlow’s commitment to social justice was evident in the many initiatives he launched. He co-founded the Mangrove Steel Band and the Mangrove Community Association, which provided support and advice to local residents. The restaurant however attracted unwelcome attention from the police, who conducted numerous intrusive raids. Crichlow and eight other activists were arrested in 1970 and charged with incitement to riot. This was a major turning point in the fight for racial justice in Britain, with the trial known as the Mangrove Nine trial. It put a spotlight on racism within the police force and made history as the first judicial acknowledgement of police targeting people based on their race instead of genuine criminal activity.

Despite the challenges he faced, Frank Crichlow persevered. He continued to run the Mangrove Restaurant for many years, always striving to make a positive impact on his community. His legacy is still felt today. The plaque is a reminder of the struggles and triumphs of a man who truly lived a life devoted to making a difference.
