Friedrich Ries, a name whispered amongst the rustling leaves of Karlsruhe’s Stadtgarten. Here at the Fr.-Ries-Denkmal, we celebrate the man who shaped this green oasis. Born in 1849, Ries didn’t initially envision a life devoted to horticulture. He began as an apprentice at the Eichtersheimer Schlossgärnterei. Yet, he yearned for more. Through self-study and travels to Paris and Nancy, he cultivated his passion. Returning to Germany, he passed the road master construction examination in 1876. He then worked as a construction supervisor for Karlsruhe’s Water and Road Administration. A turning point came in 1884. Karlsruhe’s Lord Mayor, Lauter, appointed Ries to lead the municipal nursery. Five years later, Ries became the Stadtgärtner, the city gardener. The Fr.-Ries-Denkmal stands as a tribute to his vision. He transformed the Stadtgarten, introducing the Japanese Garden and the Lauterberg. He also created the rose garden, sadly removed during the Federal Garden Show. His influence extended beyond the Stadtgarten. He contributed to the Sallenwäldchen, the Beiertheimer Wäldchen, and the Erbprinzengarten. Even the main cemetery fell under his care. Ries wasn’t just a gardener. He was a community leader, serving as chairman of the Horticultural Association. He also chaired the Badischer Verein für Geflügelzucht. He held honorary chairman positions with the Association of German Rose Breeders and the Municipal Civil Servants Association. He even co-published the “Gartentechnik und Gartenkunst” with Franz Sales Meyer. In 1915, declining health led Ries to request retirement. It was granted in 1917. He lived in Durlach until his death in 1929. This monument, erected in 1967, captures his legacy. The two-meter granite column, bearing his name and dates, supports a bronze bust. The bust is oversized, representing 125% of a normal human size, emphasizing his larger-than-life impact on Karlsruhe’s green spaces. Here at the Fr.-Ries-Denkmal, we remember not just the gardener, but the visionary who shaped Karlsruhe’s beauty.
