Journey back 330 million years at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh’s Fossil Garden. This isn’t just any garden. It’s home to the Craigleith Tree. This tree is the UK’s largest plant fossil.

The Craigleith Tree, or Pitys withamii, is truly ancient. It lived during the Carboniferous period. Scotland was then a tropical swampy forest. Imagine this very spot covered in lush greenery and strange plants.

This enormous tree trunk weighs ten tonnes. It stretches 10.5 meters long. The Craigleith Tree was found in Craigleith Quarry in 1830. This quarry was once Edinburgh’s largest sandstone source. Stone from here built Edinburgh Castle and Holyroodhouse. Now, that quarry is a retail park.

The fossil shows how plants have always been central to life on Earth. Scientists first thought it was a conifer. They later realized it was a seed fern. The tree’s trunk was torn from the ground by flooding. Water carried it to its resting place.

The Craigleith Tree arrived at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh in sections. Parts went to the Natural History Museum first. All pieces reunited here in 1873 or 1874.

Look closely. You might spot primeval tree rings. See marks from Carboniferous bugs burrowing under the bark. Experts used 3D scanning to capture every detail of the Craigleith Tree. This helps them study it and preserve it.

The Edinburgh Biomes project is restoring the Garden’s Glasshouses. The Craigleith Tree was moved for safekeeping during this project. It will return in late 2027. New displays will reveal even more discoveries about it.

Another fossil tree piece became a memorial. West of the beech hedge, find a red stone with a bird bath. It honors four sisters who loved the Garden and its birds.

The Craigleith Tree is more than just a fossil. It connects us to a time before dinosaurs. It reveals secrets of Scotland’s tropical past. This ancient tree is a reminder of our planet’s long history. Its story is etched in stone. It is waiting here at the Fossil Garden.
