Feel the wind whipping around you as we stand before the Fortín de Acosasco. This imposing structure perched atop Cerro Acosasco offers breathtaking views. It’s more than just a pretty picture though. This fortress holds a dark and compelling history.

Built between 1889 and 1890 during Roberto Sacasa’s second presidential term the Fortín de Acosasco was initially intended as a military stronghold. General José Santos Zelaya later used it to control León during rebellions. Its strategic location made it virtually impregnable. The triangular design resembling a spearhead is striking. Thick sloped walls with top channels served as trenches. Arched passageways provided entrances one wide enough to bring in military supplies. The central building now stands where the original courtyard once was. Surrounding areas housed weapons gunpowder and soldiers’ quarters.

Under Anastasio Somoza Debayle’s dictatorship the Fortín became a prison. It was here that unspeakable acts occurred. Whispers of torture disappearances and clandestine executions filled the city’s cafes. People called the area “the cabbage patch” because children would discover skulls among the grass. The National Guard Somoza’s feared secret police would haul away anyone suspected of dissent. Their bodies would later appear lifeless on Acosasco’s slopes.

In 1979 the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) fought to liberate León. The National Guard retreated to the Fortín making their final stand. After several weeks of intense fighting the Sandinistas finally captured the Fortín on June 7 1979. This marked a symbolic victory a turning point in their struggle to overthrow the Somoza dynasty.

Today the Fortín de Acosasco stands as a stark reminder of this turbulent past. Though now managed by León’s municipality and used by INETER as a meteorological station the walls retain the scars of its brutal history. You can still see the small cells “las chiquitas” where men were asphyxiated. The “Oven” a trench where prisoners were baked alive. The evidence of water torture and electrocution is chilling.

The Fortín de Acosasco is open year-round. It’s a place of both beauty and darkness. A testament to the resilience and struggles of the Nicaraguan people. It’s a powerful place to reflect on the past. A place that whispers stories of courage resistance and tragedy. Let’s remember those who suffered here. Let’s never forget.
