From the 15th century onwards, hermits lived on the slopes of Mont Valérien, their days divided between manual labor and prayer, in tranquil solitude. The Forteresse du Mont-Valérien is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices endured during World War II, as it was used by the Nazi occupiers for executions. Over a thousand résistants and hostages were executed in a clearing within the fortress walls, their memories etched in the heart of the French people. This grim chapter in history is commemorated by the Mémorial de la France Combattante, erected outside the fortress walls, a tribute to the courage and resistance displayed during the darkest hour.
