The cannons of Fort Saint-Jean pointed inward. A curious fact isn’t it?

Welcome to Fort Saint-Jean a majestic fortress overlooking Marseille’s Old Port. For centuries this imposing structure has witnessed the city’s triumphs and tragedies. Built in 1660 by order of Louis XIV Fort Saint-Jean stands as a testament to royal power. Its strategic position at the harbor entrance initially seemed designed for defense. Yet the cannons aimed inward a subtle sign of control rather than protection. The fort’s history extends far beyond its 17th-century construction. It stands on the site of a 12th-century commandry of the Knights Hospitaller of St John of Jerusalem. A medieval hospice for crusaders it represents layers of history. The 15th-century tower of King Rene I of Provence also stands within the walls. This beautiful structure shows the fort’s evolution over time.

During the French Revolution Fort Saint-Jean became a prison. The Duke of Orleans Louis Philippe II and his sons were held here. The Reign of Terror touched even these imposing walls. After Robespierre’s fall a horrific massacre occurred. Around a hundred Jacobin prisoners were killed within the fort. The tragic event remains a chilling part of the fort’s story.

World War II brought more destruction. Fort Saint-Jean became a munitions storage site under German occupation. The war ended in an explosion. A munitions depot exploded in 1944 destroying much of the fort. After years of neglect the fort’s reconstruction began in 1967. It was completed in 1971. Today Fort Saint-Jean stands proudly. It is part of the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations. It is a symbol of Marseille’s resilience and rich history.
